Map Development
How to Create Fortnite Maps: From Idea to Publication
Creating a Fortnite map means designing a game inside Fortnite. The environment matters, but so do its rules, pacing and the information players need. Use this guide to choose a starting point and plan what to check before releasing your island.
Before you start
- Creative and UEFN offer complementary ways to build.
- A playable prototype is more useful than scenery without rules.
- Publication takes place in Creator Portal and requires review.
Choose between Fortnite Creative and UEFN
Fortnite Creative lets you build inside the game on supported platforms. UEFN is a PC editor with broader workflows for environments, lighting, effects, custom assets and Verse logic.
Start with a small test while you are still defining the rules. Choose UEFN when the project needs editor workflows or custom logic that justify learning those tools.
Design a round before building the scenery
Write a one-page brief with the goal, expected player count, approximate round length and win condition. Players should understand where they spawn, what equipment they have and when the encounter ends.
Sketch a simple path from spawn to objective to finish. Consider late arrivals, disconnects and players who do not know where to go. Resolving these early reduces later rework.
Build a version you can already play
When starting from a template, check what is included, its usage rights and what is needed to run it. A visual reskin cannot replace reviewing the rules and testing the experience.
- Set up the main play space, spawn points and a visible objective.
- Configure rules, devices and the end of the round before decorating.
- Play a full round, restart and check that the loop repeats.
- Add art and lighting after the basic experience works.
Test beyond your own session
Ask someone to enter, finish a match and start another without voice instructions. If you need to explain a button or rule, make that guidance part of the experience.
Test simultaneous spawns, disconnects, early round endings and inactive players. Write down the expected and actual behavior so you can prioritize fixes.
Prepare your Fortnite island for publication
UEFN publication is completed through Creator Portal. Follow Epic's process for a private version, memory checks, island information, age rating, media and review.
Use a thumbnail that represents the actual game, a clear description and required attributions. Check account eligibility and Epic's developer rules before submitting. A private version is not the same as a published island.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Verse to create a map?
Not for every mechanic. Start with devices and add Verse when the design needs custom logic. First define what the game should do.
Can I create maps without a computer?
Fortnite Creative supports in-game creation on compatible platforms. UEFN requires a PC; you can work with the US Remote team on development.
Can I sell a template of my map?
You can submit a proposal through the seller section of UEFN Studios. Products are reviewed before catalog inclusion, and you need the appropriate rights.
